{"id":42461,"date":"2023-11-08T15:22:19","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T15:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mylocaloptician.co.uk\/?p=22766"},"modified":"2023-11-08T15:22:19","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T15:22:19","slug":"children-masking-eyesight-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bedotdev.com\/mylocaloptician\/children-masking-eyesight-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"One in three parents worry about their kids eyesight \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>One in three parents worry their kids are masking poor eyesight \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h2>Specsavers reveals the tell-tale signs to look out for as one in three parents worry their kids are masking poor eyesight<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u201cThe Pirate Poser\u201d and \u201cHead Tilter\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>New survey reveals that over a third of parents worry their child is covering up bad eyesight\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Yet more than one in five have never taken their child to the opticians and four in ten have never considered their child might need glasses\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Specsavers expert reveals the signs to look out for in children including tilting their head when reading \u201cThe Head Tilter\u201d, closing one eye when completing tasks \u201cThe Pirate Poser\u201d and sitting at the front of the class to see the whiteboard \u201cThe Teacher\u2019s Pet\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than one in three (35%) UK parents worry that their child is covering up issues with their eyesight.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as new findings from Specsavers reveal the common behaviours most reported by parents with children aged six to 15 that suggest that they might be having sight issues.<\/p>\n<p>These include: their child sitting too close to the TV (a Close Encounter Enthusiast) (48%), frequent complaints of headaches (The Headache Hero) (42%), always sitting at the front of their class (The Teacher\u2019s Pet) (37%) and delaying bedtime to avoid reading (The Reading Rebel) (28%).<\/p>\n<p>However, over a third (39%) of parents admit to overlooking these behavioural signs with 40% saying they have never considered their child might need glasses, and over one in five (21%) confessing they have never taken their child to the opticians.<\/p>\n<p>The study shows that this might be because one in three (33%) parents prioritise other health appointments for their children over eye health checks. With doctors&#8217; appointments (66%), the dentist (52%) and vaccinations (49%) taking priority.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 32% of parents who said their child currently wears glasses, over a third (39%) revealed they missed the symptoms indicating potential sight issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Admittedly, 97% of those surveyed wish they\u2019d spotted the tell-tale signs earlier. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not a new phenomenon. Three years ago, the issue was brought to media\u2019s attention by\u00a0<strong>former singer and presenter, Rochelle Humes,<\/strong> who candidly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-9044475\/Rochelle-Humes-reveals-Alaia-needs-glasses-brushed-seven-year-olds-complaints.html__;!!Fi27mSULZDU!3O9hk03G8pEDstuKPlVSUfYfXxGuokcJdLZD_1wDBJ-ajdWXC4kz8ft0O2zuENJqfBfL7Qa6u3hZd91J2k3_9B7aIvRo$\">shared her experience<\/a>\u00a0about her daughter\u2019s eyesight issues.<br \/>\nOn social media, she explained\u00a0how her seven-year-old had been complaining about her eyes, but she admitted to overlooking this, thinking her daughter was stalling before bedtime.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, she said:\u00a0<em>\u201cAlaia has been complaining about her eyes and that she wants to sit at the front of the class with her friends so she can see better, she also says that her eyes are blurry every time it&#8217;s time to go to bed. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI honestly have been dismissing it, I thought she was stalling going to bed and wanted to sit at the front of class so she could gossip with her best friends.\u00a0Turns out I was wrong. She needs glasses&#8230;How do I feel? AWFUL!\u201d<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s study further identified that the average age at which a parent first takes their child to the optician is six years old, with over half (56%) going for a routine check-up and nearly a quarter (22%) if they have a family history of eyesight issues. Meanwhile, nearly one in five parents (19%) admit to only going if their child\u2019s teacher advised them to (19%).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This is despite experts at Specsavers recommending children have their first eye test at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.specsavers.co.uk\/help-and-faqs\/at-what-age-should-children-first-visit-the-optician\">three and a half years old.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Among the reasons for not booking an appointment sooner, nearly two-thirds of parents (63%) said they didn\u2019t think their child had any issues with their vision, while 32% assumed that they were conducted at school.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, more than one in ten (14%) identified fear as a barrier to not getting their child\u2019s eyes tested, with over a quarter (28%) saying they worry about their child being picked on at school for wearing glasses, and over half (52%) attributing it to a fear of having their eyes touched.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, over a fifth (21%) of parents said they don\u2019t feel very informed about the importance of eye health for children.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mylocaloptician.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/11\/Giles-Edmonds-200-Copy-150x150-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><br \/>\nSpecsavers Clinical Services Director Giles Edmonds\u00a0<\/strong>says:<em>\u00a0&#8220;A lot of parents assume that because their child doesn&#8217;t display any signs of a vision problem, there&#8217;s no need to have their eyes tested.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;However, this couldn&#8217;t be further from the truth. Ensuring your child has regular eye examinations from an early age is incredibly important for several reasons. Given more than 80 per cent of our learning, cognitive and social abilities are facilitated through our sight, it&#8217;s extremely important to your child&#8217;s overall development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cP<em>oor eyesight can cause learning and behavioural problems. Conditions such as squinting and amblyopia (lazy eye) can be treated more effectively if they are picked up earlier, which could make a huge difference to your child. Lastly, an eye test doesn\u2019t just check vision. It can also detect other underlying health conditions.\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Giles outlines the top tell-tale signs of potential vision problems to look out for in children:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Eye Rub Maestro<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>\u201cEye rubbing is a sign of tired eyes at any age. If you notice your child rubbing their eyes while focusing on an object, it could indicate eye strain, which could be due to an uncorrected vision problem.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Reading Rebel:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cIf your child is reading below their expected level this could be a sign of several vision problems. Children who have issues with their eyesight may also repeat the same line twice, lose their place or use a finger to guide their eyes. Holding books or devices at a distance can support long-term eye health \u2013 keeping these items at a length of their knuckle to their elbow is a good guide, as holding them too close can be problematic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Eye Strain Star:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cSometimes there are physical signs such as straining eyes, closing one eye or holding objects too close or too far away. If kids are straining to see the board at school, they may also get frustrated which can mean they are disruptive in lessons. All these things can indicate problems with vision.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Headache Hero:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cYour child might experience more headaches, especially when reading. When you look at objects or screens at close range, the muscles in and around your eyes need to work harder to focus. Over time, these muscles can get sore and tired. Similarly, squinting for a long period may tire the muscles around your eyes, which can lead to headaches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Head Tilter<\/strong><em>: If your child has perfected the art of tilting their head to read a book, it&#8217;s a sign that they might be hiding issues with their eyesight.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Close Encounter Enthusiast<\/strong><em>: If your child makes a habit of sitting too close to the TV, this could be a sign that they are struggling to see the details.
