Specsavers supported him with a \u00a32,500 donation during the run, which has raised more than \u00a319,000 so far for a research programme run by charity Glaucoma UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018An estimated 700,000 people have glaucoma in the UK, but half of them don\u2019t know it. Regular eye tests are crucial for early detection. It\u2019s why I undertook this mission. I also did it for my sons so if they ever face a diagnosis of glaucoma, there will be greater awareness of the condition and more research into it,\u2019 says Higgy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m grateful for the support from Specsavers who are committed to caring for the nation\u2019s eye health. Every donation makes a difference.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Joanne Creighton, chief executive of Glaucoma UK, says that Higgy is an inspiration and has helped raise vital funds for research into glaucoma.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Only 1.3 per cent of health research funding in the UK is given to eye research. To tackle this, Glaucoma UK is introducing the Pitts Crick Research Fellowship, a post-doctoral research fellowship, in celebration of the charity\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Morris, Specsavers director of professional advancement, says: \u2018Congratulations to Higgy for completing this amazing challenge.
